ABOUT US

MISSION:

The mission of the Department of Family and Children Services is
to assist families and individuals to provide
the care, protection and experiences essential to their well being.

The Welfare Department of Clayton County, as it was known in the 1940s, began with the responsibilities of: Aid to the Blind; Aid to Dependent Children; and Old Age Pensions. The first welfare director was hired in the early 40's. The only other employee was the office secretary. The departments' estimated budget was around $20,000.

Today's Clayton County DFCS employs more than 220 workers, with an annual budget of over $21 million for a county with a population 260,000 and growing.

Present Director, Cathy Ratti, started her social service career in 1979 working in foster care. Her duties then advanced to Child Protection Service Investigator, Permanency Planning Caseworker, Food Stamps, and Welfare Case Personnel, Deputy Director in 1994, and then Director since 1997.
