CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES

The purpose of Child Protective Services (CPS) is to ensure the protection and safety of children who are victims of abuse and neglect. CPS is divided in two components: Investigations and Case Management Services.

INVESTIGATIONS

CPS case managers are mandated by law to investigate reports in order to determine the validity of the report. The case manager interviews all pertinent parties, observes, and gathers information. This information becomes useful in determining the level of risk of further maltreatment of the child. The investigation is completed within 30 days. Depending upon the risk to the child(ren), the case can be closed or the case can be opened for ongoing services of the child(ren) may come into the custody of Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS).

FAMILY PRESERVATION SERVICES

Family Preservation services case management responsibilities include ensuring the child(ren)'s safety, protection, and well-being by reducing the risk of further maltreatment. The case manager utilizes their skills, as well as the services of professionals, paraprofessionals, community resources, and volunteers to assist the family to adhere to the case plan goals. The case manager maintains monthly contact with the child(ren), parents, and collateral contacts as specified by the client's level of risk. After the client's successful completion of the case plan goals, the case can be closed. If the risk heightens, the child(ren) may come into the custody of DFCS.
