HOW THE FOOD STAMP PROGRAM WORKS - The Food Stamp Program helps needy households by providing benefits that can be used to buy qualified food items.

There are nationally uniform rules for eligibility and benefit determination. Federal regulations allow 30 days to complete a food stamp application. Note: Individuals who meet certain criteria may be eligible for expedited processing.

Eligible households receive monthly benefit allotments in the form of electronic cards (EBT).

Anyone may apply for food stamps.

Federal regulations provide that an eligible family must be allowed the opportunity to participate within 30 days from the date of application.

HOW TO APPLY - Complete and sign the: Application For TANF, Food Stamps Or Medical Assistance (Form 297 (English)) (Version en Español). This form may be obtained from this web site, or by calling (770) 473-2300, or by applying in person at DFCS located at 877 Battle Creek Road, Jonesboro. An application must contain the applicant's name, address or a way to contact the applicant, and signature. Applications may be mailed or filed in person. The food stamp application is also available online at http://dfcs.dhr.georgia.gov/02/dhr/dfcs/ home/0,2224,3815890,00.html.

ELIGIBILITY - The following individuals would be included in Food Stamp Assistance:

  • Individuals who live together and purchase and prepare their meals in common.
  • Children under 22 years living with their parents.

RESOURCE LIMIT

  • $2,000 per food stamp household
  • $3,000 if one member of the household is 60 years of age or older.

Note: Many types of resources are not counted i.e. homeplace and vehicles.

INCOME LIMITS

  • Based on the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) and varies by the number in the household.
  • The maximum gross monthly is 130% of the FPL. (See below)
  • The maximum net monthly is 100% of the FPL (See below)
