MISSION: The mission of the Department of Family and Children Services is to enable families and individuals to provide the care, protection and experiences essential to their well being.

PROMOTION OF PHYSICAL WELL-BEING

  • FOOD STAMPS - A US Department of Agriculture Program which provides assistance to single people and families with little or no income to buy food. In Clayton County, for FY 2006, 12,412 households were helped with $9,703,123 being expended.
  • MEDICAID - A governmental program designed to provide a program through which pregnant women, children under nineteen (19), low-income families, elderly, disabled, and blind individuals can obtain medical assistance. In Clayton County, for FY 2006, 88,826 individuals were helped with $189,717,849 being expended.


PROMOTION OF SELF-SUFFICIENCY

  • TEMPORARY ASSISTANCE FOR NEEDY FAMILIES (TANF) - A state program designed to provide temporary financial assistance to families with dependent children. It is tied to meeting work requirements and is time limited. In Clayton County, for FY 2006, 1,471 households were helped with $3,812,276 being expended.
  • EMPLOYMENT SERVICES - A program designed to assist TANF applicants and recipients become job ready and self-sufficient by providing services tailored to the individual.
  • CHILDCARE - A program that provides families receiving TANF, Protective Services or who have low income with assistance in meeting childcare expenses. In Clayton County, for FY 2006, there were over 7000 children in subsidized childcare at an expenditure of $14,813,743.

INSURING SAFETY AND PROTECTION

CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES (CPS) - Provides services for children who are at risk of or have suffered from abuse, neglect, abandonment, or exploitation. For FY 2006, Clayton County received 1,802 CPS Referrals resulting in 938 investigations with over 500 cases of abuse/neglect confirmed.

ADULT PROTECTIVE SERVICES (APS) - Provides services to adults who are at risk of abuse, exploitation or neglect, including self-neglect. For FY 2001, Clayton County received 162 APS referrals resulting in 83 cases of abuse/neglect confirmed.

CHILD PLACEMENT SERVICES - Provides services for children who cannot be cared for in their own homes due to abuse or neglect.

  • FOSTER CARE - Child Placement Services are needed when children cannot be cared for in their own homes due to abuse or neglect. DFCS recruits foster parents and provides 30 hours of pre-service training, known as Model Approach to Partnerships in Parenting (MAPP).
  • Clayton County was selected as a pilot county for a new initiative entitled "First Placement, Best Placement." This initiative provides for the best possible placement for the child in an effort to establish a lasting placement. Due to the success of this program, it has now been extended statewide.
  • ADOPTIONS - Adoption service include recruiting and studying permanent adoptive homes for children in the custody of DFCS.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

  • INTERN PROGRAM - A collaboration between DFCS and local colleges and universities to offer students relevant experiences in the social work arena.
  • VOLUNTEERS - Provides opportunities for local residents to volunteer for special projects throughout the year.
