PICK AN ELF HOLIDAY PROGRAM

You can make a difference in the life of a child this Christmas! Each year, Clayton County Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS), conducts the Pick an Elf Program for children in Foster Care. (Frequently Asked Questions About the Program)

Share your holiday spirit with more than 400 children in foster care in Clayton County. You will experience the real spirit of the season while you brighten the lives of children who have experienced neglect, abuse, broken homes, poverty and who often have a sense of hopelessness.

Individuals and groups are needed to become "Elves" to purchase gifts from a child's Christmas list of donate gifts, money or gift cards. Donation are needed by December 14, 2007.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why is help needed to purchase gifts for children in foster care?
A. No federal or state funds are allowed to be used for gift giving.

Q. Can I specify the age or sex of a child I want to sponsor?
A. Yes, you can indicate on the Sponsor Form that you wish to sponsor a boy or a girl and what age.

Q. Will the gifts I purchase really go to the child whose name I receive?
A. Absolutely, the Christmas lists are from real children in foster care.

Q. Why do you ask for the gifts not to be wrapped?
A. We need to check to be sure that the gifts are age appropriate. Also, if a child only receives a couple of gifts, we add to that from the extra gifts that are received.

Q. How many gifts do I need to purchase?
A. Each Christmas list has at least three choices for small items (under $40.00) and three choices for large items (over $40.00). You may choose one or more items in each category.

Q. Where is the greatest need?
A. Our teenagers. Most people want to sponsor younger children. Each year, we have at least 50 or more teenagers who do not get sponsored. If they do not receive a sponsor, all we have left to give them is a $10 or $25 gift card.

Q. If I don't want to sponsor a child, can I still help?
A. Yes! You can five money or gift cards in the amount of $5, $10, or $25 from stores such as Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, Blockbusters, Goody's, Old Navy, etc. You can also donate items such as portable CD players, small radio/CD players, gift sets of perfume/cologne for girls and boys, jewelry for teen age girls, and other toy items.

Q. Are the gifts tax deductible?
A. Yes, your gifts are tax deductible. Forms are provided by this agency.
