TEMPORARY ASSISTANCE FOR NEEDY FAMILIES (TANF)
 

HOW THE TANF PROGRAM WORKS
  • TANF is a program which provides temporary cash assistance benefits for a maximum of 48 months in Georgia.
  • Receiving TANF benefits requires participating in work activities.
  • Receiving TANF also involves specific eligibility requirements such as relationship, income, resources, deprivation, age and other qualifications.
  • Participation in the TANF Program requires cooperation with Child Support Enforcement.
  • Regulations provide 45 days to complete a TANF Application.
  • Eligible households receive monthly benefit allotments in the form of electronic cards (EBT).

HOW TO APPLY - Complete and sign the: Application For TANF, Food Stamps Or Medical Assistance (Form 297). This form may be obtained from this web site, or by calling (770) 473-2300, or by applying in person at DFCS located at 877 Battle Creek Road, Jonesboro. An application must contain the applicant's name, address or a way to contact the applicant, and signature. Applications may be mailed or filed in person.

ELIGIBILITY - The following individuals may be eligible for TANF:

  • Children under 18 years of age, their parents or other specified relatives.
  • A minor parent and her/his child(s) residing in the home of the parent/guardian.

RESOURCE LIMIT

  • $1,000 per eligible household

INCOME LIMITS

  • Depend on the Gross Income Ceiling set by the Georgia State Legislature base on family size. It is currently 185% of State Standard of Need (SON).
  • The State Standard of Need (SON) is fixed amount set by the Georgia State Legislature and is based on family size. It is a compilation of basic monthly expenses i.e. food, shelter, utilities and other essential needs.
  • The Georgia State Legislature sets the family maximum payment. (See below)
